Aswan 4-Day Tour of the City’s Top Attractions
Experience a 4-day tour of Aswan's top attractions, including a visit to Elephantine Island, the largest in the Aswan area and one of Egypt's oldest sites. Its significance dates back to the predynastic era, likely due to its strategic location at the Nile's first cataract, which acted as a natural barrier between Egypt and Nubia, making it easily defensible. Historically, the southern part of the island housed a fortified town. A bridge once connected the mainland to the island. Elephantine, named after the Greek word for elephant, was known as Abu or Yabu in ancient times, both meaning "elephant."
The island's town was also called Kom, in honor of Khnum, its god. You'll explore the Botanical Gardens, filled with exotic plants from around the globe. In 1899, Lord Kitchener used this island as a rest stop for his campaign, calling it the Lord's House. After his passing, the island became part of the Ministry of Agriculture.
The island also features the Aswan Museum, an ancient Nilometer carved into the rock, and impressive rock tombs and shrines of nobles from the Old and Middle Kingdoms. The island’s palm groves conceal two Nubian villages that welcome visitors, offering stunning views along the river.
The tour continues with a visit to the High Dam and the Philae Temple, where you’ll learn about the goddess Isis and the story of Osiris, who was killed by his brother Seth, and how Isis found her deceased husband. Finally, you’ll journey to the remarkable Abu Simbel Temples, located a short distance from Aswan, adding a final touch of ancient grandeur to your adventure.
